Unable to send e-mail to GroupWise user after moving to AD

We are in the process of moving from a Novell network to a MS one, to move users over we currently move them over to the AD, run Start-OnlineCoexistenceSync in PowerShell, we then assign a licence in the O365 admin portal - however we do not select the Exchange licence as most users are still using their Novell GroupWise mailboxes, if we were to keep this selected any e-mails sent from users using Outlook would go to the Outlook account and missed (hope that makes sense as it's not going to get better as I go on)

We have found that when we do this an error occurs that the user is duplicated:

An object with the same proxy address already exists in Windows Azure Active Directory but is of an incompatible object type (object classes: contact, group, or user). Correct this issue in the local directory services or in Windows Azure Active Directory and try again

To correct this we would delete the user from O365 Portal> Exchange Admin Centre> Contacts however for some reason this time we have the following error when attempting to e-mail the user from Outlook (from GroupWise emailing the user is fine, and if Outlook users reply to an e-mail the user is included in that gets to them)

The email address you entered couldn't be found. Please check the recipient's email address and try to resend the message. If the problem continues, please contact your helpdesk.

Searching online I found a couple of things about using get-mailbox etc and trying to find an error that way but because they do not have the Exchange licence selected on the O365 Portal, even when I apply that part I get the same error.

I know it's long-winded but I will answer any queries the best I can to explain the situation better
