ActiveSync clients allowed to configure their devices and send-as non-existent domains.

Over the last few weeks I've had a few issues where users complain of their email addresses showing up incorrectly for instance, if the users email address is tsmith@domain.com it will occasionally appear to both recipients and the sender as tsmith@dommain.com or other such variations. We eventually tracked this down to users accidentally spelling the domain name incorrectly when setting up iphones and other activesync devices. How can this be? How does exchange even allow them to authenticate the device if the domain name in the email address is incorrect, much less allow them to send as that address from a connected device?
