Exchange Server 2010: changing the FQDN on Client [servername]

Hi there,

Exchange Server 2010 on Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard SP1 64-bit

My question is: would it be OK to rename the FQDN for Client servername Receive Connector to reflect the external name?

Reason:

I was trying to set up a client connection (Outlook 2010) using IMAP and specified the following settings:
- Incoming Server: mail.company.com port 993 SSL
- Outgoing Server: mail.company.com port 587 TLS
- provide the necessary username/password

When trying to test the connection, it pops up a notification that says the certificate can't be verified when it tries to send a test email.
Looking at the Client servername receive connector on Exchange Management Console shows that the FQDN actually says: servername.domain.local
Our public facing address is mail.company.com

I've tried to change it to mail.company.com and sure enough it stops prompting with the certificate warning.
At the moment the value remain the same as default: servername.domain.local
