Outlook "trying to connect" issues

$

We are running on Exchange server 2010.We are connecting to outlook through RPC over HTTP and no MAPI enabled. We are facing intermittent issues with Outlook connectivity (Outlook connection status change to "trying to connect" ). All the user are connecting from internal network only.We do not face any issues with OWA Connectivity or Exchange ActiveSync. We ran EXRCA and did not find any issues except”Checking the IIS configuration for client certificate authentication.Client certificate authentication wasn’t detected.” Need your help in identifying the issue and troubleshoot it. I am not getting where to start to troubleshoot the issue. Can you please assist/help me in resolving it.

SMIME lookup failing on Exchange 2013

Hello all,

I've been at this for a week and still cannot figure out what the cause of the issue might be.  I'm trying to setup SMIME encrypting and signature capabilities for an Exchange environment.  The UserCertificate Attribute is populating in ActiveDirectory for the users.  I have an online Root CA that does not issues anything but the Subordinate CA cert.  I then have a Subordinate CA that issues all client certificates.  The CRLs and AIA locations are functioning and downloadable.

When I try to send an encrypted message in OWA, all I receive is the message "An error occurred while encrypting this S/MIME message.  Certificates can't be found for any recipients."  Not sure what else do verify.  I believe I've configured the SMIMEConfig correctly in Exchange as well.  Based on this....http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn626155(v=exchg.150).aspx

Thanks for any help

Outlook autocomplete cache stops working for multiple users at the same time

Hi there

Ever since we upgraded our Exchange 2010 to Exchange 2013 we have had problems with the autocomplete cache in Outlook 2010.

We have 700 users and about once per week I get a call about the autocomplete cache. A few users are on cached mode, but most use online mode. The problem appears on both, but it can usually be corrected by /cleanautocompletecache.

Granted, the autocomplete cache gets corrupted sometimes, but it seems to happen a lot for us. I have noticed that often more than one user experiences the problem at the same time, and, since the problem starting after upgrading Exchange, I suspect that the issue is with Exchange and not Outlook. Yesterday three users complained about the cache at the same time.

I know how to get a broken cache going again - that is not the issue. The issue is keeping this from happening so often.

Anyone out there able to help?

Thanks!

Trouble with work e-mail using Outlook 2007

I am trying to add a work email to outlook 2007, using web access with a https://company address here/  the company provided me with, I have been googling this for some time and can't seem to find any relevant answer to this. this closest I have found is that it may be a configuration problem with Outlook 2007, but there is no mention of a fix.

I would be most grateful if someone could help me with the set up

Outlook Negotiate/NTLM authentication credential prompt

$

Hello everyone,

I have been digging quite a while now for a solution to this but apparently there is not a lot of systems out there utilizing this or having problems with it. Here it comes:

We have a pure (no migration or coex) Exchange 2013 CU7 environment in production with 3 x CAS/MBX Servers (3 sites connected via WAN VPN). Inside our network our outlook clients (2013 SP1+) authenticate via Kerberos (ASA/SPN) to the Exchange Servers and connect via MAPI over HTTP. Everything working fine!

External is a different Story: We have a Application Request Routing (ARR) machine in our perimeter network that forwards external users to the Exchange Servers and for a reason that I didn't manage to find yet I can't get it to work so that domain joined clients (notebooks) that are outside the company's LAN would use their cached credentials to try to authenticate outlook against the Exchange Servers. Outlook always prompts the user for her/his password on start up and then connects fine. No problems after that - PF, OoO, OAB - everything is working. If the user restarts the outlook -> password prompt once again and fine after that. Saving the credentials works but is obviously not the way NTLM/Negotiate is supposed to work.

So here is my progress on this:

I verified my virtual directory settings. Here is how the Mapi virtual directory looks like:

IISAuthenticationMethods            : {Negotiate}
InternalUrl                                    : https://mail.domain.com/mapi
InternalAuthenticationMethods    : {Negotiate}
ExternalUrl                                   : https://mail.domain.com/mapi
ExternalAuthenticationMethods   : {Negotiate}

I've set everything to Negotiate because we don't have legacy Exchange Servers nor legacy mail clients in our network. I tried setting it to NTLM only which made the problem shift. Test clients connect to exchange and are able to view/receive mails but got the infinite credential prompt and weren't able to access PF, OoO and OAB. Setting it to NTLM and Negotiate produces the same result as Negoiate alone.

Browsing https://autodiscover.domain.com/Autodiscover/Autodiscover.xml with IE (autodiscover URL set in intranet settings) gave the expected error code 600 without prompting for credentials. Even Firefox (network.negotiate-auth.trusted-ris set to domain.com) is utilizing cached windows credentials and is able to log on to autodiscover and OWA with windows authentication enabled.

When a client has a valid Kerberos ticket cached (cmd -> klist) Outlook uses that ticket successfully even from outside the network but as soon as the ticket is gone (sign out and sign back in) Outlook prompts for user credentials again.

"Show connection status" in Outlook and the HttpMapi log on the CAS both show that Negotiate has been used for the connection. But why the password prompt then?

I read up on IIS ARR and it seems that it just passes through the authentication information when set to "anonymous authentication" which it is.

Now how I understand the auth method Negoiate in Exchange 2013 is that Outlook and the Server try to handshake on the strongest auth mechanism available in the following order: Kerberos -> NTLM -> Password Promt (Basic/NTLM) but in my case this doesn't apply.

Now I would apprechiate it very much if someone could educate me in how this is supposed to work and if there is a mistake in my configuration or my understanding of the authentication process correct it.

A great day to everyone!

problem removing or changing user photos

We're having a strange problem with the user photo thumbnails in the various clients we use.

We have an Exchange 2013 organization (3 front end servers, 3 mailbox servers, 6 databases), Lync 2013 and Outlook 2010/2013 clients.

When we change the user picture in Active Directory, we do not see the picture replicate to the clients. In one particular case. the picture was changed three times and we see one picture in OWA (the one in Active Directory), one in Outlook and another one in Lync. In a different case, we see two different pictures in two different OWA sessions (which I didn't think was possible).

As far as updating the Global Address List, I've tried the following commands:

Set-Mailbox"user" -RemovePicture

Update-GlobalAddressList -Identity "Default Global Address List"

In Outlook, I've tried "Download Offline Address Book", both with "Download changes since last Send/Receive" checked, and unchecked.

I saw in another forum a suggestion to migrate the user to a different database, and I tried that, but to no avail.

Any suggestion of what we can do here?

Thanks,

David

Outlook 2013 performance issues with Citrix VDI (non-cached mode)

$

Hello there - we use Office 365 and also have a citrix farm where we are currently publishing Outlook 2013 to be used company wide via a VDI. Bullet points will probably get my question over in the best way;

- We have around 3500 employees who will be predominantly using Outlook in this way.

- We have noticed that the performance of Outlook when not in cached mode is bordering on unusable. Simply scrolling down your list of emails will cause the application to halt, whilst it pulls the relevant data from Exchange on-line.

- Due to the nature of Citrix and OST's, we cannot use Cached mode.

- We have raised tickets via our O365 Portal and have simply been told that we cannot be offered any support via MS and we in fact, need to speak to Citrix. Citrix however, is working fine, this is an issue with the way Outlook communicates with MS's on-line environment.

Has anyone set up a similar environment before? Does anyone have any info on best practices? Is there any kind of throttling that Microsoft use which can be adjusted? Does this setup simply not work?!

Any feedback would be greatly recommended. As I say, 3500 users are depending on a solution and if that means we have to spend more money, we will certainly look in to that.

Many Thanks,

Tom

The setup is as follows

Windows Server 2012 R2 running Exchange 2013 CU5 - CAS Role
Windows Server 2012 R2 Running Exchange 2013 CU5 - Mailbox Role
Published via Web Application Proxy, using ADFS on Server 2012 R2

The problem

Browse to https://webmail.contoso.com/owa - log into OWA as myself this works fine - try and open another users mailbox that i have full access to, i get HTTP 400 bad request

If i browse to https://servername and perform the same procedure it works.   This leave me to the conclusion that the Web Application Proxy server / ADFS server is at fault

this KB article is not relevant in this instance, as I can resolve the names correctly;http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2770796/en-au

Any suggestions

Thank you.

People and Groups not appearing in Address List

We have an Exchange 2013 deployment running on Windows 2012 Standard servers. Some of our people and all our groups are not showing up in the Outlook Address Book on people's client application. This despite the fact that "hide name from address book" is unchecked on these people and groups.

This affects both those running Outlook and OWA.

Any idea how I can go about troubleshooting this?

Hello!

Yesterday I installed CU7 on our Exch2013 servers. We have 3 CAS and 7 Mailbox servers. One of Mailbox servers used for PublicFolders databases and mailboxes. All is fine except Windows XP clients. They're cannot connect to public folders. When users try to expand PF three they're receiving an error "Cannot expand folder. Configuration not set". Office 2007 and 2010. On Win7 and 8.1 all is OK (office 2007, 2010 and 2013).

OWA - save menu disappears when switching between calendar and mail

Hi everybody!  A user brought this situation to my attention:

In OWA 2013, when he creates an invite in Calendar, and switches back to Mail, a menu appears (see below) and then disappears immediately.  Instead of allowing him to choose whether to save or discard changes to his invite, it automatically discards, and goes to Mail.  Any ideas why this might be happening?  We recently migrated to from Exch 07 to 13, and this is happening in both IE and Chrome.  Thanks!

Membership of Exchange contact group not updating in Outlook 2013

I have Outlook 2013 linked up to my work's Exchange server. Everything works great, except I can't see the Membership list of e-mail distribution lists/contact groups. I did click on Modify Members and no users were listed. I've tried restarting Outlook, Send/Receive > Download Address Book with no luck. This list was created over a day ago with a handful of initial members. It appears in my work's Outlook 2010.

Any ideas?

Outlook clients unable to connect to Exchange / Windows user profile

Exchange 2010
Outlook 2010/2013

I've seen a dozen or so computers in the last few weeks with this problem. The user suddenly cannot connect to the Exchange server in Outlook. (Sorry, I don't have specific error messages for this part.)

If I try a repair on the Email account or try to create a new Mail profile, I get this error:

"The action cannot be completed. The connection to Microsoft Exchange is unavailable. Outlook must be online or connected to complete this action."

  • I have verified all Exchange and mail security settings. Outlook configuration is not the problem.
  • I tried deleting %appdata%\microsoft\outlook and %localappdata%\microsoft\outlook.
  • I tried a repair on Microsoft Office.
  • I tried creating a new Mail profile for a different email account.

The only thing that has fixed this problem is a completely new Windows user profile, which tells me there is something else broken in the user profile. Does anyone have any idea what it might be?
