OL 2013 NavPane Collapsing Secondary Mailbox

As part of support, we all access a shared mailbox that is added to our profile through account settings - Change - More Settings - Advanced -- Mailboxes.

Recently (within the past month), we've witnessed a new behavior where the expansion state of the folder in the outlook Folder Pane constantly resets.

Typically, our usage is to have the Inbox expanded out like so:
Deleted Items
Inbox
    1 - Desktop
        John
        Bob
        Ted
    2 - Dev
        Bill
        Joe
Outbox

What we've found it that Inbox folder is, based on an unknown event, collapsing down to:
Deleted Items
Inbox
Outbox

I believe the cause has to do with a change in read state of items within the folder[1] but it does not seem to be regularly reproducible. It may have to do with the initial change from unread to read of a single item, while once you've marked it as read, switching it back and forth does not seem to reproduce it.

Cached vs. non-cached does not make a difference.
ResetNavPane does not fix it.
All users accessing the mailbox are seeing the problem.
We've tried setting the other Mailbox's Inbox as the primary.
Repaired Office 2013.
Reduced the size of the other mailbox

I'm looking for tips/someone else who has seen this. Our IT dep't doesn't buy my belief that it was a recent MS update that changed the behavior.

[1] This would map to a similar issue I've found where the Unread count in the Favorites, but only for the Inbox of the primary mailbox, regularly goes away. I have not investigated that in depth yet, as it is only a minor annoyance currently.
