Outlook Anywhere/Autodiscover - Slightly confused

Hi,

An obvious question... how do these work together?

My current scenario is that we have not enabled Outlook Anywhere but I would like to. We do not have any autodiscover records set up internally or externally.

I have checked my SCP object and it points to our CAS by internal fqdn so cas1.domain.local

This is obviously working for internal use by domain joined devices.

Now do I need to amend this or not in order for devices to work externally...

I guess I am asking at what point is autodiscover used...

  • Is it only used once during Outlook profile creation?
  • Or is it used if Outlook cannot reach the currently set FQDN?

So scenario is... user with a laptop currently connected to Exchange with Outlook using cas01.domain.local as the server. Currently if this user is at home and launches Outlook, it will state it cannot connect to cas01.domain.local...

If I add the external DNS autodiscover records would Outlook attempt to reconfigure if it cannot contact cas01.domain.local by using the smtp domain suffix?
