The name on the security certificate is invalid or does not match Exchange 2013, Outlook 2010 followed by credentials prompt

Exchange 2013 with all roles installed in lab environment as a virtual machine.  Domain is example.local

Configuring Outlook 2010 from within internal domain, getting the messages:

The name on the security certificate is invalid or does not match"
Saying yes to the message brings up a credentials dialog box with the user's email address already filled in.  I cannot get past this point.  I have tried all user syntax: user@example.local, example\user, user@example.com, username, will not let me authenticate.

As far as the certificate error, there is a third party SSL cert setup with only external FQDN.
Autodiscover internal URI points to the internal FQDN.  Should I change the internal URI to point to the external FQDN of the server?  External DNS is hosted by third party.  Or possibly configure an SRV record to point to the external FQDN?

Regarding the credentials problem, I was able to configure Outlook just fine before adding the SSL certificate and completing the post installation tasks.  In addition, I cannot setup Outlook manually as I used to in Exchange 2003, but I think that is normal.

Some help would be appreciated.
