We are using OWA previewing functionality with our custom written WOPI Server to preview office documents. However, it looks like the performance is really bad, especially with power-point services.
When we trigger power-point preview for the first, it seems to take ~20-25sec to preview ~2MB ppt. Similar is the case with excel services. Subsequent previews are faster because of the OWA caching mechanism. However, they are also not consistent.
There doesn't seem to be any issues with computing power of OWA farm as we never see any high load on them.
We searched about it and found some ways to improve the rendering performance for power-point and other services (for ex: configuring number of worker process etc). However, all of them are specific to OWA working with SharePoint (new-SP* commands). These commands is not for configuring OWA 2013.
We are using OWA 2013 with March update (http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=36981).
Just to add to it, it looks like the conversion service (service which is responsible for
converting the power-point to image) seems to take a lot of time. All other services (for ex: viewing service) doesn't seem to take long.
Specifically, we are looking for following answers:
- How can we increase the number of Web-App viewing worker-process? There are lots of documentation available to increase it for SharePoint based solution but how can we do it with standalone OWA 2013?
- Any available documentation of what should be the recommended topology for setting up OWA 2013?
- From the logs it looks like there is some service end-point redirection: "Secure connection detected, redirecting service endpoint from ppt/view.svc/jsonAnonymous to ppt/view.https.svc/jsonAnonymous"? Why is that so? Is there any way to disable it?
