Outlook crashes when attaching a file during the preview

I originally was going to ask this as an outlook crashes while attaching a file, but I have more information and its more specific than just that.

Outlook 2007 connecting to a exchange 2010 server. We are getting more and more of these problems over the last two weeks. It seemed to start around september 24th. The problem as it came to us was that outlook was crashing intermittently when trying to attach a file. Some people it would crash all the time while others only crashed every so often.

We had the users uninstall office and reinstall it. Remove all add ins and also run in safe mode but nothing seemed to be consistant with the failure. We ran the various virus scans and they found nothing. We turned off the antivirus software and the problem continued. Once we got a system in we were better able to pinpoint the issue.

The attachment is only failing with docx or xlsx files. It works find with doc, xls, pdf, and pptx files. But if you do a copy and paste, or if you quickly double click on the file during the insert it can be attached easily. The issue it seems is when you use the attachment option and then hover the mouse over the docx and xlsx files that outlook crashes. These seems to coincide with the preview or tooltips windows that pops up. For doc and xls files the tooltips window comes up just fine and the file can be attached. But with docx and xlsx, this seems to be an issue.

To further checkout the issue we tested it against word (since word is the basic editor for outlook). Word displayed the same issues when opening a file. If you hover over the docx and xlsx files with the mouse then word will crash. The doc and xls files seem to be just fine.

Testing with excel didn't have an issue with the docx or xlsx files. However I must note that excel did not give a tooltip window for those files either. Not sure how that was turned off.

Using explorer to look at the files didn't give any issues either.

Not sure why this just suddenly started. On the system that was being tested the last updates were installed on Sept 11 so there is too much time between that date and the failures on sept 24th.

So any suggestions out there, or maybe those with issues might be able to verify our results.
